How to help children generate great writing ideas

Abstract

In the chapter How To Help Children Generate Great Writing Ideas, from our book How To Teach Writing, we show how children can generate their own writing ideas within the parameters of a class writing project. When children choose their writing topics, it can significantly enhance their motivation and performance. Often, children underperform in writing tasks due to limited knowledge and lack of interest in teacher-assigned topics, a challenge particularly acute for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Writing requires the coordination of multiple cognitive resources, including content knowledge. When children write about topics they are familiar with and emotionally connected to, the quality of their writing can improve as they draw on their strengths and existing knowledge.

To support children in generating effective writing ideas, teachers can guide them through structured activities such as Ideas Parties, where students brainstorm and discuss potential topics with peers and teachers. Teachers should provide feedback and suggestions, helping students further refine their ideas. Additionally, teachers can model idea generation strategies and encourage students to explore specific, rather than general, topics to add depth and voice to their writing.

By fostering an environment where children feel confident and supported in their topic choices, teachers can help students develop as engaged and proficient writers.
