I once played a very important squash match when I was 11. It was the Under 12’s East Sussex County Championship, Division Three, Group F, Section B relegation playoff. As I say, very important. I was concentrating so hard on the game that I decided to forget about breathing – it was obviously too much of a distraction. I ended up making myself unconscious as the result. My point is that sport is really important to many people’s lives – particularly children’s. For example, it was Liverpool manager Bill Shankley who famously declared that ‘some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that’. Football, and in fact all sport, is full of drama and stories. A match reporter’s job is to try and share that story.
