Daddy – my favourite word

To write about a favourite word can be a useful exercise and can help you “get going” with your writing when you need something to fire up the imagination.

There are many wonderful words that can be described as a “favourite word”. Often simply because of its ability to invoke a very special feeling of happiness each time it is heard. For me that word is “Daddy”.

It is a very common word and a word that everyone knows what it means. It is a word used to describe someone who has fathered children or at least has taken up the role of someone who cares for and raises children.

Of course, it normally concerns a male…for females the equivalent word would be “mum” or something similar.

For me, “daddy” is not a word that I enjoy only when reading it; though that can give me pleasure too. Especially when it is one of the kids who use it when writing to me.

However, it always made me feel wonderfully happy when I heard my kids screaming “daddy” on the top of their voice as soon as they saw me when I came home.

The wonderful feeling that washed over me each time I heard them scream “daddy”, each time I could catch them in my arms and hug them – that is a feeling that simply cannot be described in words. It is a feeling that must have been felt to be understood.

My kids are grown-up now and I seldom hear them scream “daddy” in the same way they used to. I sure miss those days, and I will always remember the pleasure that this simple word gave me. Those are memories I treasure.
